It’s hard to believe we have officially lived in Kelowna for 2 years! Because the move was SO FAST, we had little to no time to find a home for our family to move into. The first thing we noticed when looking at homes in our neighbourhood of choice was just how little storage was in all of them including our home that we purchased! We knew we would need to add storage down the line but focused on moving our family in and getting settled into our new city. I love home renovations so I knew storage was something I could easily add down the road.

After living in our home for some time we realized we had the perfect spot for us to be able to install cabinets to help us with our storage woes. An empty cutout in our basement would become the storage solution we were hoping for! We went back and forth with installing a closet or installing cabinetry and ultimately decided cabinets would be the best use of our space, so off to STOR-X Denny and I went!

I reached out to Allan Dieckmann, a local STOR-X owner here in Kelowna to ask his advice on what would be best for our home renovation project. He was a WEATH of information! Denny and I toured the showroom to take a look at what they offered and were BLOWN AWAY by the storage solutions available. Once Denny and I had an idea on the cabinet style we wanted, we had a STOR-X consultant visit our home to do the proper measurements for our space. She came equipped with samples and finishes to help us choose what was going to be the best colour and product for our home. It was great to be able to hold the different cabinet colours up to our walls so we could ultimately choose the best option!

We wanted to lighten up the family room but still compliment the dark wood bar right beside it so we picked a finish option that would work for both!

The next step was to head back to STOR-X here in Kelowna to take a peek at the renderings which brought our vision to life. It was so cool to be able to see the space all put together on the screen while Allan walked me through the different options available. We could choose from shelves, drawers, pull out shelves and more so we really needed to hone in on what we planned to fill our new cabinets with.

I knew we needed more storage, but when I started to think about all the things that I planned to fill the cabinets with I was able to narrow down. Our cabinets were installed with stationary shelves with one bank of cabinets housing pull out drawers. This was going to be the best option for our family to maximize our storage capacity! I also love that the pull out drawers work so well for all the pool towels we have. Nobody tells you just how many towels you need when you have a pool!

Now a little bit about the installation. The install team arrived at our home a couple months after our final selections and quickly got to work on installing our new cabinets. I was so impressed by how quick they were and how clean they kept the family room through the STOR-X install process! Everything was complete from start to finish in a matter of hours and no detail was missed with the final product.

I could not believe how beautiful our new cabinet was, it took my breath away when I saw it for the first time all finished! Everything about it is just what I wanted, from the hardware, to the colour, to the storage that it offers. The kids were equally impressed with the extra space to store all of their things.

I got to work right away organizing our family room and filling it up! We have plenty of space now to mix in toys, games, electronics, crafts, photo albums, pool supplies and exercise equipment as well as seasonal items and linens. As the kids get older and transition out of toys, this multifunctional space can hold camera equipment, work files and more. The GREATEST feature of this cabinet is that we can hide the mess behind closed doors!

Now for the details! I wanted to cabinets to be the stand out piece in our family room so the details and style were very important to me. After consulting with the interior designer on the STOR-X team we ultimately chose:

The finish is perfect for our space as it pulls colour from our walls, flooring and the dark wood of the bar. The colour will work for years to come even if we decide to change the paint colour because the light stripe finish goes with everything!

Having the opportunity to see the cabinetry drawn up before installation was so helpful to me so I could envision what it was all going to look like in our home. Now that this space is complete and our shelves are filled, it’s got me thinking……..where could we add extra storage next?
