Burnaby Travel Guide – My family and I love to hit the road, we’ve been having so much fun exploring BC since we moved in 2020! We find ourselves travelling to the Lower Mainland from Kelowna a few times a year for sports, shopping and exploring the region.
Burnaby has been a long time favourite city of mine to visit in Canada since there is so much to see and do! When my husband and I were first dating we lived in South Surrey and often found ourselves hanging out in Burnaby because we loved it so much.
It’s also a great destination to visit when you have teens, they will love all that Burnaby has to offer! We had the opportunity to partner with Explore Burnaby for our trip and they helped us plan out a great itinerary while we were visiting with the kids. The Tourism Burnaby website is a great resource to check out if you are travelling to the region, you can find it here. They offer so many great suggestions online of things to see, do and eat while visiting Burnaby!
Because our kids are getting older, we cherish the time together when we are travelling. We love being able to to explore new destinations, try new restaurants and of course do some shopping when we travel. Our kids are seasoned travellers and always look forward to the adventures we plan for them. On this trip in particular we surprised our son with a birthday trip of a lifetime, complete with the royal treatment by staying in a 2 Penthouse Suite at Delta Hotels by Marriott Burnaby Conference Centre. Logan’s favourite mall to shop at is Metropolis at Metrotown so we knew we had to stay in Burnaby so he could shop all of his favourite stores. To top it off we celebrated with not one, not two but THREE birthday cakes. He said it was the BEST BIRTHDAY gift ever and he doesn’t know how we’ll ever top it!
Burnaby offers plenty to see and do with teens in the city! Our kids LOVE to shop so we spent most of our time shopping on Saturday. Metropolis at Metrotown is the ultimate destination for shopping, with all of our favourite stores under one roof! Some of our favourite shops include Zara, Chipotle, Hudson Bay, Lululemon, Champs, Plenty, The Gap and Sugarfina. We spent 4 hours shopping at Metropolis at Metrotown!
Our 15 year old Logan lucked out to get himself a pair of the latest Nike’s that had dropped that morning and Quinn and I had a blast trying on clothes at Plenty. My husband Denny left with a bag of new clothes from The Bay and we all spent a little too much time in Winners/Homesense since they have something for everyone!
The Amazing Brentwood is a quick 5 minute drive from Delta Hotels by Marriott Burnaby Conference Centre and offers lots of options for shopping, eating and entertainment! We spent Sunday afternoon at one of our personal favourites, The Rec Room playing games with the kids. We love that The Rec Room is entertainment for the whole family under one roof! Of course we did some shopping at The Amazing Brentwood too! With so many great stores for the whole family we shopped our faves including Nike, H&M, Purdys Chocolatier and London Drugs.
After some BUSY days in Burnaby, it was great to be able to relax at Delta Hotels by Marriott Burnaby Conference Centre. This hotel is centrally located in Burnaby and easy to get to off Highway 1 which we travel on from Kelowna. The hotel is bustling with activity and offers so many amenities including:
- Full service Starbucks Coffee in the lobby
- Villa Bistro for breakfast and brunch
- ATLAS steak + fish for dinner
- Grand Villa Casino on property
- Free parking
- Full service gym
- Large one and two bedroom penthouse suites
We loved being able to enjoy our favourite Starbucks drinks in bed as well as the delicious breakfast options at Villa Bistro. The bistro is open bright and early and offers a variety of popular breakfast dishes. They also have a kids menu available! I loved the Yogurt Parfait, it was the perfect breakfast to start my day. It’s so nice having both these options available under one roof when you travel with kids!
Delta Hotels by Marriott Burnaby is a great destination to stay if you’re looking for a fun night out in the city. Not only do they offer free parking, you can have an elevated dining experience at ATLAS steak + fish and then try your luck at Grand Villa Casino!
We celebrated our son’s 15th birthday with an INCREDIBLE dining experience at ATLAS steak + fish. Our waitress was so attentive and offered an elevated dining experience to our family throughout the night. From the table side Caesar Salad to Peppercorn Cream Sauce that was set a flame at our table, the kids couldn’t believe how “cool” it was. We feasted on the most delicious steaks and my hubby even enjoyed fresh shaved truffle to top his dish. We finished it off with a birthday cake and a Baked Alaska that was flambéed table side as well. If you are looking for the ultimate dining experience for that special occasion, we can’t recommend this restaurant enough!
After dinner we took the kids back to the Penthouse Suite and headed to the Grand Villa Casino to try our luck at the slots. My hubby and I had fun playing the slot machines and were entertained by the live music offered on Saturday nights. All in all it was a really fun night out for the family with a night cap for mom and dad to fit in some alone time.
Burnaby has SO MANY amazing restaurants we had a hard time choosing where to go during our weekend visit! Cafe La foret topped our list for Sunday brunch, with a variety of sweet and savoury options for everyone in our family. The kids were blown away by their Mango and Oreo waffles, which was their choice for brunch. Denny enjoyed the Bacon Platter and I warmed up on a rainy day with a bowl of their Creamy Corn Soup so I could save room for their famous Red Velvet Oreo cake. The restaurant was a hotspot and bustling with people which you know means it’s good! They did a great job of getting food out to people in a timely fashion and had an extensive menu!
We spent our time on Sunday exploring the city of Burnaby, with a visit to the Burnaby Art Gallery, Cherry Blossom tree spotting and dinner at Hart House. The combination of the restaurants lakeside setting, unrelenting drive for fine cuisine, and warm, welcoming service made for an exceptional experience for our family. Our dinner was elevated with beautiful dishes, fresh seafood and a unique dining experience inside the heritage house. We finished off our meal with incredible desserts and headed back to the hotel for some rest and relaxation after a busy day.
The 2 Bedroom Penthouse Suite at Delta Hotels by Marriott Burnaby Conference Centre offers sweeping views of the city which you can enjoy from the bath. It was so relaxing to just sit back and take in the views after a busy weekend exploring the city with the kids. The views are picturesque both day and night!
Thank you to everyone who made our weekend getaway to Burnaby so special! From Delta Hotels Burnaby surprising us with the 2 Bedroom Penthouse Suite for our family to the elevated dining experience at ATLAS steak + fish. Thank you Tourism Burnaby for putting together a really fun itinerary to head out and explore the city and Hart House for providing us a dining experience like no other. We had so much fun in Burnaby we can’t wait to get back again soon!
